Global War on Terrorism Freedom Memorial

New Memorial to Honor Florida's Fallen Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom Veterans Approved

At a recent City Commission meeting Lakeland Police Sergeant James Ring, a Chief Warrant Officer II with the U.S. Army Reserve, and Melissa Sanchez, founder of Warrior Walk Lakeland gave a short presentation on a proposed Global War on Terrorism Freedom Memorial to be built in Lakeland's Veterans Park. The memorial will incorporate symbols of 9-11 including a foundation shaped like the Pentagon, a sculpture outlining the silhouette of the twin towers and a grass area representing the Shanksville Pennsylvania field in the background.

Construction for memorial is estimated to cost $31,340 and will be funded through community fundraising efforts. The Commission unanimously approved this joint venture with the Polk County Veterans Council and Furr & Wegman Architects, P. A. The completed memorial is scheduled to open on Veterans Day later this year.
